WEBINAR RECAP: Why Are Science Based Targets Important for Your Association & Members?

Climate Action for Associations (CAFA) was proud to co-host the first webinar of a series Thursday 3rd April with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

CAFA and SBTi share the common goal of helping businesses decarbonise - a goal that we can't achieve without associations representing businesses and industry.

Associations, by nature, are sector leaders and key platforms that allow for their members' interests to be represented, and for business challenges to be addressed collectively and efficiently.

Such challenges that businesses of all sizes have been facing over the past few years, include becoming more environmentally sustainable. The phrase "responsible business" is growing, as a low carbon economy is becoming an increasingly critical necessity for organisations worldwide.

Our webinar series is for associations and their members to learn more about science-based targets and their role in ensuring responsible business.

Science-Based Targets (SBTs) are specific, measurable reduction goals that organisations can set to reduce emissions in line with the latest climate science.

These targets are a central step in creating science-aligned reduction plans to reach net zero by 2050. Validated by the SBTi, SBTs ensure that emissions reduction plans are scientifically sound.

SBTs provide a sound decarbonisation pathway aligned with the Paris Agreement goals, contributing to reducing physical risks.

Early adoption of SBTs can also differentiate a company in the marketplace, leading to competitive advantage, operational efficiencies, cost savings, and enhanced brand reputation.

Last but not least, SBTs encourage innovation, regulatory resilience, long-term stability, investor confidence, and compatibility with other standards.

The benefits and process of setting science-based targets (SBTs) for associations. This collaboration aims to accelerate the alignment of businesses with climate science, fostering a sustainable future.

CAFA, as a dedicated resource and network for sustainability in the membership sector, provides the necessary resources, guidance, and support for associations to achieve net zero. SBTi, with its expertise in setting and validating emissions reduction targets, ensures that these efforts are aligned with climate science.
